This week the Obama Presidential Center was revealed

This week on Dezeen, the long-awaited Obama Presidential Center, designed by US studio Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, was unveiled in Chicago.

Built to honour former US president Barack Obama, the complex is defined by a monumental granite-clad tower.

Rising to 69 metres, the granite tower, which is surrounded by low-level buildings topped with artificial hills, has a viewing area enclosed by giant letters at its peak.

To mark the opening of the Obama Presidential Center, we rounded up the other 13 presidential libraries in the USA.

Spread across the country, the structures dedicated to former presidents include buildings designed by Gordon Bunshaft, IM Pei and RAMSA.

This year’s Serpentine Pavilion was revealed in London

In the UK, the 25th Serpentine Pavilion was revealed in London. Designed by Mexican studio Lanza Atelier, the pavilion was informed by curved, traditional English brick walls, known as crinkle crankle walls.

The building, which opens to the public today, is the first Serpentine Pavilion to be built from brick.

Also in architecture news, Lego created a set based on the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

Launched to mark the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death later this year, with 12,060 pieces, the set is the largest ever made by the toy brand.

In design news, Swedish designer Gustaf Westman created a playful cat tree called the Chunky Cat Tree.

It is the latest piece in his collection of Chunky designs, joining cups, glasses, vases, stools and flower pots created by the designer.

Popular projects this week included a pixelated skyscraper in Brazil, a laptop designed by Ferrari and a Malaysian guesthouse topped with a bamboo and steel canopy.
