a civic space planned for elche, spain
The Elche Congress Centre ‘Espardenyer’, designed by Luca Poian Forms in collaboration with Frade Arquitectos, is set to occupy a site bridging the city’s historic Vila and the modern Altabix district. Envisioned as a civic structure with a strong urban presence, the project transforms this transitional zone into a lively connector rather than a boundary, shaping a communal public space through its architecture.
Positioned strategically, the building responds to Elche’s diverse context through its massing and orientation. A compact form emerges from a robust base, thoughtfully designed to address the region’s Mediterranean climate. The facade, featuring woven textile elements, introduces porosity at street level, providing shaded areas for social gatherings. Rather than appearing as a standalone monument, the structure integrates seamlessly into the city’s fabric.

the facade of woven esparto grass
A signature aspect of the Espardenyer proposal by Luca Poian Forms and Frade Arquitectos is its distinctive esparto grass veil. Esparto, a material deeply rooted in local craft traditions and domestic architecture, is woven into the facade to filter sunlight and allow airflow, creating a comfortable exterior envelope tailored to the climate. This organic layer serves both as an environmental filter and a nod to cultural heritage, reinterpreting traditional techniques within a modern architectural context.
The building’s internal circulation is designed for clarity and ease, guiding visitors naturally toward the central performance halls— the centerpiece of the Congress Centre. These spaces are carefully crafted for superior acoustics and focused gatherings, while secondary areas accommodate conferences, exhibitions, and informal activities. The architecture is adaptable to various uses, supporting both large events and everyday interaction without unnecessary spectacle.

At street level, Espardenyer expands the civic realm, drawing public space into the heart of the building. Paved zones gently transition into shaded areas, encouraging people to pause, gather, and interact—creating an urban agora open to both daily passersby and event attendees. The boundaries between outside and inside are intentionally blurred, fostering accessibility and encouraging regular community use.
The design integrates environmental strategies throughout. Passive solutions are combined with renewable energy systems and geothermal technologies, ensuring comfort in Elche’s warm climate. The choice of local materials minimizes transportation impact and strengthens the building’s connection to its surroundings.
