Australian practice Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors has unveiled Howqua River Lodge, an off-grid residence nestled in the Victorian Alps, featuring interiors clad in spotted gum timber.

Situated in the Howqua Valley, the house was created for the family of the studio’s founder, Rob Mills. Mills’ father once worked for the Howqua Valley Forest Commission and purchased land in this region, establishing a longstanding family connection.

The design draws inspiration from the native gum trees of the surrounding forests, which is reflected in the home’s distinctive material palette. Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors (RMA) has completely lined the living areas with dark spotted gum timber planks, creating a strong link to the landscape.

“Howqua River Lodge has been a passion project for many years – a self-sufficient retreat immersed in the wilds of the Victorian Alps,” Mills told Dezeen.

“This place, deeply connected to my family for generations, holds great personal significance,” he added. “The home is a place to holiday, unwind, reconnect, escape and adventure.”

“The earthy tones, natural textures, and understated forms of the spotted gum timber allow the surrounding landscape to remain the primary focus.”

The home was designed as three connected pavilions with pale brick walls

Howqua River Lodge is arranged as three parallel, interconnected pavilions that cascade down the site. Each pavilion features pale, rough-rendered brick walls and overlapping, sloped metal roofs, punctuated with angular chimneys.

The palette of hardwood timbers, stone, and bagged render was chosen to harmonise with the natural environment and local architectural traditions, while also introducing playful and joyful elements to the interiors.

“Howqua River Lodge draws on the traditional forms and materials of the region’s alpine architecture, resulting in a timeless design deeply connected to the natural environment and surrounding landscape,” Mills explained.

“We incorporated beautiful stones from around the world, experimenting with colour, light, and texture. We allowed ourselves to be expressive and joyful with the material selection. Similar to telling a good joke, we think a home should balance seriousness with playfulness,” he continued.

“While building is a thoughtful and considered process, there’s also a sense of playfulness that enlivens a space and defines a great interior.”
