BUREAU Redefines the Lighthouse in an Urban Harbor Context

PHARE YLLIAM is a lighthouse conceptualized by the BUREAU architecture firm for the waterfront of Geneva, Switzerland. Lighthouses traditionally serve a distinct navigational function and possess a notable spatial identity. Characterized by their solitary, upright forms at the borders of land, they act as vital markers and help interpret the surrounding landscape. This project embraces the lighthouse typology, carefully adapting it to the unique conditions present within Geneva’s harbor.

Unlike the remote coastal locations often associated with dramatic cliffs or rugged terrain, Geneva’s waterfront is defined by its calm and orderly setting. In response, the design emphasizes the lighthouse’s infrastructural character rather than mimicking the more iconic, isolated lighthouse forms. Positioned against a backdrop of riprap, the structure asserts its place as a component of a greater system, moving away from being a mere symbolic object.

Layered Vertical Sequence defines PHARE YLLIAM Lighthouse

The design draws inspiration from the hyperboloid structures pioneered by early 20th-century Soviet engineer Vladimir Shukhov, known for their efficiency, openness, and structural delicacy. The result is a lattice framework that shifts visually in response to changes in light and weather, causing the lighthouse to alternately stand out or blend into its environment depending on the observer’s perspective. The vertical volume is anchored by a robust mineral base, echoing the stonework that forms the harbor’s edge.

The project also creates a new sequence of spaces along the harbor’s extension into the lake. The interior is organized across three levels, each providing a unique spatial experience. At the base, visitors find a sheltered area with a broad, panoramic view over the water. Above this, a compact, cabin-like space offers elevated, 360-degree vistas across the lake. At the very top, a movable lantern serves as the lighthouse’s primary functional element. This lantern, integrated within the structural columns, can be raised or lowered to meet both operational requirements and environmental conditions.

PHARE YLLIAM by the BUREAU design studio represents a blend of structural innovation, infrastructural clarity, and thoughtful engagement with the harbor’s landscape. Through its distinctive form, material strategy, and functional adaptability, the project presents a modern interpretation of the lighthouse—one that serves both as an operational part of the harbor and as an architectural statement shaped by its immediate surroundings.
