Atrey and Associates’ Delhi Residence: Climatic Intelligence and Sculptural Form

The Nadhyavart Residence in Delhi, crafted by Atrey and Associates, embodies climatic responsiveness, material authenticity, and thoughtful spatial design within a brutalist architectural framework. The home utilizes passive design methods, precise geometries, and detailed craftsmanship, all unified in a sweeping, curvilinear concrete structure. This bold and raw form is softened by a terracotta brick screen that brings warmth and visual rhythm. Inspired by traditional jaali patterns, the perforated screen serves as a breathable façade, filtering sunlight and casting dynamic shadows, achieving a balance between high performance and a rich, sensory environment.

Studio Philosophy and Architectural Intent

Atrey and Associates, under the leadership of Ar. Arun Sharma, approaches architecture as an ongoing dialogue between people, nature, and built form. Each project is shaped by core values: human-centered design, intelligent luxury, sustainability as a guiding principle, nature-positive approaches, meticulous attention to detail, creative ambition, and a dedication to quality. The Nadhyavart Residence embodies these ideals, balancing sensitivity, innovation, and craftsmanship to achieve architecture that is purposeful, environmentally mindful, and deeply attuned to its inhabitants.

The exterior of the home is marked by a deliberate interplay of materials. The cool smoothness of curving concrete is set against the tactile richness of patterned brickwork and the sleekness of ribbed metal cladding. This combination of textures—balancing rough with refined, warm with cool—generates spatial tension and a sense of dynamic control. Viewed from above, the cantilevered upper volume appears daring and almost weightless. Up close, the perforated brick screen and the dramatic shadows produced by sculpted surfaces reveal a complex, layered geometry, underscoring the project’s unwavering commitment to material honesty and dynamic form.

Within the home, the design emphasizes spatial experience through light, fluid lines, and carefully selected materials. The layout revolves around an open-to-sky void—a vertical shaft that channels daylight into the heart of the residence. This central space animates the interiors, making the movement of the sun and the passage of time tangible for its inhabitants. Circulation is treated as sculptural form, most notably in a gracefully curved staircase that rises through the void, softened by timber detailing in contrast to the concrete surroundings. Generous use of interior glass openings creates visual connections and a sense of vertical layering, fostering interaction between different levels. The overall effect is one of understated luxury, combining dark marble and warm timber with discreet, integrated lighting to sustain a refined and serene ambiance.

The sense of quiet luxury and material harmony extends into the home’s private spaces. Bathrooms are designed to feel introspective and tranquil, featuring gentle curves, stone finishes, and framed views of nature. Bedrooms are oriented to maximize daylight and garden vistas through expansive windows. A semicircular backlit wall serves as both an artful focal point and a source of ambient illumination. These spaces create a sanctuary-like atmosphere, offering calm and respite from the bustling pace of Delhi.
