Dika Design redefines early learning through irregular forms
The Fuzhou ESUO Future Kindergarten, designed by the Dika Architectural Design Center in Fuzhou, China, offers a fresh perspective on early childhood education through its imaginative, irregularly shaped structure topped with a rooftop astronaut sculpture. Departing from conventional kindergarten layouts, the building becomes a dynamic, three-dimensional environment, extending exploration from the ground up through corridors and rooftops. The corridors act as all-weather adventure pathways, and each level is transformed into an interactive play area. The astronaut sculpture not only crowns the building visually but also conceptually encourages children to see themselves as cosmic explorers, reinforcing the central theme of ‘exploring the universe.’

Fuzhou ESUO Future Kindergarten: Architecture as a Third Teacher
Moving away from standard layouts where play elements are an afterthought, the Dika Architectural Design Center prioritizes child-centric design—honoring children’s innate curiosity without overindulgence, nurturing imagination without excess, and emphasizing safety without unnecessary limitations. Circulation pathways, interactive areas, and flexible zones encourage children to explore intuitively, fostering self-discovery and engagement with new experiences. Here, architecture itself becomes a ‘third teacher,’ shaping movement, perception, and creative play.
The building’s unconventional geometry introduced significant construction challenges. Crafting arched outdoor areas and winding ramps required meticulous casting, detailed surface finishing, and close coordination between the design and construction teams. The wet Fuzhou climate further complicated matters, yet the team successfully preserved the building’s playful forms while adhering to rigorous safety criteria. Notable features include corridors envisioned as narrative ‘interstellar plank roads,’ fluid spatial layouts integrating classrooms with activity spaces, and the iconic rooftop astronaut sculpture that turns each upward glance into a spark for the imagination.
