SCAD debuts intricate plaster-cast installation at Design Miami

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has introduced an elaborate haptic installation made up of thousands of plaster-cast objects at this year’s Design Miami, as featured in this exclusive video produced by Dezeen.

The installation was designed by New York-based designer and SCAD sculpture alumnus Sarah Fonzi. It forms part of a broader exhibition highlighting SCAD alumni work within the institution’s booth at Design Miami.

Fonzi’s installation combines elements such as toy ships, umbrellas, and beetles, giving the booth’s walls a richly textured and sculptural appeal.

At the centre of the booth, Christian Dunbar—a New York-based designer and graduate of SCAD’s furniture design program—showcased a solid wood desk characterized by sweeping curves and meticulous craftsmanship.

Adrian Pepe, a graduate of SCAD’s design for sustainability program, presented two embroidered wool tapestries inspired by the culture and mythology of his hometown, Beirut, Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Carl Johnson—a Washington DC-based designer and SCAD fibres graduate—displayed three suspended light sculptures crafted from metal wire and woven cotton.

Together, the alumni works explored the interplay between softness and hardness, placing an emphasis on natural materials and handcrafted techniques to highlight the unique artistry of each designer.

SCAD hosts more than 18,500 undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines including architecture, interior design, film, and more.
