New York City developments led by teams such as SHoP Architects, HKS, and Perkins Eastman have been recommended for casino licenses, surpassing proposals from BIG and other contenders.

During a recent meeting, the Gaming Facility Location Board selected two casino projects in Queens and one in the Bronx to move forward for licensing by the Gaming Commission, which is expected to make its final decisions later this month.

The Board’s recommended projects are Hard Rock Metropolitan Park by SHoP Architects and Field Operations in Queens, Resorts World New York City by Perkins Eastman, also in Queens, and Bally’s Bronx Casino by HKS and Gensler in the Bronx.

“We’ve spent years working directly with the community to shape Metropolitan Park, and their input is reflected in every detail of this project,” said Gregg Pasquarelli, founding principal of SHoP Architects, in a statement to Dezeen.

“The board’s recommendation brings us one step closer to realizing our shared vision—transforming 50 acres of asphalt into a dynamic sports and entertainment district that puts the community first and makes New York City proud.”

These three projects were chosen from a shortlist of proposals submitted earlier in the year, which included entries from BIG and KPF.

It remains uncertain whether the proposals not selected will proceed without casino licenses. Some, such as BIG’s Freedom Plaza, feature multiple skyscrapers and additional attractions beyond gaming.

The three recommended projects will now advance for final review and approval by New York State’s Gaming Commission, with a decision expected by December 31.
