Terracotta-wrapped Further Hotel offers an alternative to Bali’s big resorts

Further Hotel is a collection of buildings in Bali, designed by architecture firm MORQ in collaboration with interior design office Studio Wenden. The hotel features handmade brick facades and includes a private rooftop pool.

Spread across four separate buildings within the seaside village of Pererenan, Further Hotel is designed to immerse guests in the local environment, offering a more integrated experience than a typical resort.

The concept was envisioned by Claudio Cuccu, known for founding The Slow in Canggu, and his wife, Martine McGrath. Together with co-founders Simon Digby and Tim Wiswell, they developed what they describe as “the diffused hotel”.

Amid widespread development on the Indonesian island, the team set out to establish a model for hotels that better integrate with Bali’s existing infrastructure and inspire guests to engage with local businesses.

“We built Further during a time when many were leaving Bali,” said Cuccu, who is originally from Rome and has called the island home for two decades.

“Our vision was to honour Balinese culture and community while advancing the hospitality experience. The diffused concept encourages guests to live within the village, fostering connection rather than passive observation.”

The architectural design by MORQ, which operates from Perth and Rome, draws on traditional Balinese craftsmanship for inspiration.

Each building is clad in facades of handmade clay bricks, sourced from nearby Tabanan. These bricks are arranged in a random lattice, creating patterned sunshades across the windows.
