This week on Dezeen, we introduced our newest series, Performance Review, which delves into the wide range of challenges facing the architecture and design sectors.


To launch the series, architecture critic Edwin Heathcote identified 12 key problems within architecture, sparking lively debate in the comments section.

We also examined the reasons behind declining architecture fees, and editorial director Max Fraser outlined 10 issues currently affecting the design industry.

Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia was appointed as America’s first chief design officer by President Donald Trump, a new role focused on enhancing the user experience of the federal government’s websites.

In an exclusive interview with Dezeen, Gebbia shared that the establishment of the National Design Studio, which he now leads, marks a significant moment: “design is in the White House”.

In architectural developments, Heatherwick Studio revealed its design for a new stadium for Birmingham City Football Club in the UK.

The 62,000-capacity stadium will be encircled by brick chimneys, inspired by Birmingham’s historic brickmaking heritage. This landmark project is Heatherwick Studio’s first stadium and was designed in collaboration with US-based Manica Architecture and director Steven Knight.
