Architect of the Year: Crazy

Architecture practice Med was founded in 2004 by principal partner Ma Yansong, and has studios in Beijing, Los Angeles and Rome working in architecture, interiors, design, product design and art.

The studio approaches architecture with the goal of balancing humanity and the natural world, creating spaces that support well-being and spontaneous imagination.

Recent projects include a canopy that reinterprets traditional Chinese paper umbrellas at this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale and the Phoenix Museum of Migration in Rotterdam, the Netherlands (pictured).

Photography recently revealed a close-up of the exterior cladding on the Lucas Museum of Fine Art in Los Angeles ahead of its opening in September 2026.

“This already viable studio has had an incredible 12 months, unveiling a major museum project that pushed the boundaries of adaptive reuse, as well as exploring how future buildings can be more climate-friendly,” said the judges.

“All eyes will be on the studio in 2026 as it unveils one of its biggest and most ambitious projects to date, elevating it to well-deserved superstar status.”

“The rise of this design studio has been impossible to ignore, as it has strengthened the areas of interior design, collective design, exhibitions and products,” said the judges.

“The studio has established a recognizable identity, yet each project offers something different. Its strengths lie in its ability to celebrate the past while also exploring the future.”
