Through a harmonious use of materials, considered forms, and thoughtful architectural planning, the residence enriches both the tangible and intangible experiences of inhabiting a space. The physical and psychological elements are seamlessly woven together, guiding residents and visitors from the lush, green landscape outside to light-filled, highly personalized interiors and a transformative Mediterranean-inspired basement. honest philosophy guides urbanscape architects

Founded in 2008 by Ar. Dinesh Panwar, Urbanscape Architects embrace a design philosophy that values honesty and authenticity, aiming to create spaces that are both functionally seamless and sustainably embedded in their context. The Civil Lines residence stands out as a meaningful commission, as it was requested by the next generation of their inaugural client from 2008—reflecting the studio’s commitment to building enduring relationships through thoughtful design. By organizing their buildings around clear frameworks such as grids or layers, they achieve spaces that are expressive, functional, and deeply human-centered, demonstrating a dedication to sensitive and effective architecture.

designing the experience of being in a space

The entrance of the Civil Lines residence, crafted by Urbanscape Architects, is meticulously designed to establish a sense of grandeur. A double-height patio serves as the welcoming point, highlighted by a Metronome lamp by fashion designer Tim Van Steenbergen. This striking feature is complemented by a wall clad in Bijolia grey Indian stone and a contrasting zinc ceiling. The main door, finished in ocean black stone, opens to a foyer that overlooks a central courtyard. Within this space, a sculptural cotton steel staircase rises, integrating seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The courtyard wall itself acts as an abstract canvas, reflecting the site’s lush greenery. Together, these elements embody the studio’s design ethos while curating a unique, meaningful experience for those who inhabit the home.

The home’s layout is carefully tailored to support a multi-generational family lifestyle. The family room forms the core of the house, overlooking a sunken courtyard that features a tranquil water body and lush plantings. This area is divided into an everyday lounge and a more secluded nook, centered around a dramatic double-height cotton steel fireplace that spans six feet in diameter. The upper levels respond to the needs of the residents: the first floor comprises four children’s bedrooms and a shared study lounge, while the second floor is dedicated to the master suites, which include a private gym and spa. Throughout both communal and private areas, a curated collection of art and objects reflects the owners’ appreciation for creativity and artistry.
